Helen Wendy Cooper

Self-publishing success for children’s author

From self-publishing her first children’s story in 2007, Helen Wendy Cooper is today a successful sponsored author and has proudly been a judge for the CITV, BAFTA award-winning show, Share A Story.

Helen’s approach now allows her to work on a commission basis to produce captivating books that also act as a marketing tool for businesses. In fact, Helen’s work has been so successful that she’s now managing it as a full-time business, with four of her books published using BookPUBLISHER.

Staying in control when publishing as a sponsored author

Helen’s rhyming story, The Kissing Tree, is her most successful to date. Sponsored by Tenbury Mistletoe Association, The Kissing Tree is selling across the UK – and Helen is expecting even more success over Christmas periods: “As my fourth book produced with BookPUBLISHER, The Kissing Tree is proving really popular – it wouldn’t have been possible without Printondemand-worldwide.”

BookPUBLISHER offers flexible packages for self-publishers with titles published under the Upfront Publishing imprint, administrative tasks taken care of, listings on popular online retailers and print-on-demand solutions:

Helen continued to explain: “Working with a mainstream publisher wasn’t right for me. Large publishers need to have control of a book, but working with other companies on a sponsorship basis means I need to keep their considerations in mind too.”

Helen’s approach to self-publishing means that she pays a small sum for the publishing of her books, and keeps commission from the organisations she works with and royalties from copies sold.

Saving time with BookPUBLISHER

Alongside unrivalled control over the publishing process, another positive of BookPUBLISHER is the time Helen saves: “For each of the books I publish with Printondemand-worldwide I choose to have time-consuming administrative tasks looked after as part of my package.”

“Not having to deal with likes of ISBN numbers and legal copies for the British Library saves me a huge amount of time. Having Printondemand-worldwide manage these is a very good investment.”

Working with Printondemand-worldwide has given me the opportunity to stay in control of the whole publishing process. I really recommend them, I think it’s the best way to self-publish

Maximising online sales with print-on-demand

Helen sees the benefits of a print on demand solution too. A great example is her children’s story, Rudy the Reindeer, which was sponsored by Cob House Country Park, who purchased 1,000 copies to hand out at their Santa’s Grotto. From there Helen has had copies printed on demand to have at visits to schools and libraries.

Anyone can buy Helen’s books online too and there’s no need to hold stock with print on demand – the print happens when someone makes a purchase. Helen explained:

“Online sales are really important these days. Working with Printondemand-worldwide means my books are listed on The Great British Bookshop, where anyone can purchase a copy and get free delivery on their order. It’s a great tool and the fact that it all works by print-on-demand is even better.”

Working with a trusted publishing partner

For Helen, the partnership she has with Printondemand-worldwide is vital.

“I always feel like publishing a book with Printondemand-worldwide is a journey together where each party wants to get the best possible result. Their customer service has been brilliant. That really matters to me – and the organisations I work with – as such a lot of passion goes into each book”.

“For example, working on The Kissing Tree the layout technician at Printondemand-worldwide was brilliant at looking at different solutions to challenges with artwork. Equally, having the Printondemand-worldwide spelling and grammar critique service gives me peace of mind,” Helen explained.

“Working with Printondemand-worldwide has been such a huge success for me. I get to focus on what I love doing, which is creating stories and reading them to children. Visiting schools, nurseries and libraries is what I really enjoy and the time I save by using Printondemand-worldwide makes that all possible.”
